The Government of India has made Home Quarantine for seven days a mandatory restriction for all international passengers. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Central Government, published an order; Guidelines for International Arrivals on the 7th of January.
The order or directive states that “The global trajectory of COVID-19 pandemic continues to decline with certain regional variations. The need to monitor the continuously changing nature of the virus and the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs) must still remain in focus. The existing guidelines for international arrivals in India have been formulated taking a risk-based approach. The existing guidelines have been revised in view of reporting of a new variant of SARS-CoV-2 (B.1.1.529; named Omicron) which has been classified as Variant of Concern by the World Health Organization.”
The directive also reiterates that it is essential to fill the self–declaration form on the Air Suvidha Portal, upload a negative COVID-19 RT-PCR report conducted within 72 hrs prior to undertaking the journey, and also submit a declaration with respect to the authenticity of the report. These steps along with additional restrictions for ‘At-Risk Countries’ and preferably pre-booking the COVID test to be taken on arrival have been declared as necessary steps to be taken before planning for travel to India. It has additionally been directed that passengers found to be symptomatic during the thermal screening shall be immediately isolated and taken to a medical facility as per the health protocol. If they test positive then their contacts shall be identified and managed as per laid down protocol.
While laying down these latest protocols, it has also been mandated that:
– Laboratories should prioritize testing of samples from international travelers
– All travelers will undergo home quarantine for 7 days and get an RT-PCR test done on the 8th
– The results of this test need to be uploaded onto the Air Suvidha portal
– If Travelers test positive then their samples will be sent for genomic testing at the INSACOG laboratory network.
– Positive testing travels will be isolated at a facility and treated as per SOP.
– Children below 5 years old are exempted from testing unless they are found symptomatic.
The Central Government has taken these steps to combat the spread of Omicron in India, which has been spreading with an extremely high transfer rate despite all the restrictions.
