Delta Introduces New Mexico City Route from Minneapolis St Paul Hub

Introduction

Delta Air Lines will add nonstop service from its Minneapolis/St. Paul hub to Mexico City.

On June 8, Delta will start operating a single round-trip flight per day on 132-seat Airbus A319 aircraft.

Service will be provided by Airbus A319s operated by Delta, with space for 102 passengers in the main cabin, 18 passengers in Delta Comfort+, and 12 passengers in First Class. Customers get access to spacious overhead storage, Wi-Fi, free in-flight chat on iMessage, Facebook Messenger, and WhatsApp, as well as free in-flight entertainment via Delta Studio.

Minneapolis/St. Paul

It will become the sixth city where Delta will provide nonstop service to Mexico City. The airline already offers service to Mexico City from its hubs in Salt Lake City, Atlanta, Detroit, Los Angeles, and New York JFK.

According to Delta, the Minneapolis/St. Paul option will give customers traveling from Mexico City access to “more than a dozen cities in the United States and Canada not available over other Delta hubs.”

Brian Ryks

According to Brian Ryks, CEO of the Metropolitan Airports Commission, which runs the airport, the decision by Delta Air Lines to offer direct service from its hub in Minneapolis/St. Paul is fantastic news for citizens and businesses in Minnesota. Mexico City is the most popular travel destination in Latin America that doesn’t have direct flights from MSP International Airport. On a daily average of 700 people depart from MSP towards Mexico. Thanks to this new service and the connections from Mexico City to other locations, travel between Minnesota and areas south of the border will be easier and more convenient.

Conjunction

As per Delta, the flights would be run “in conjunction” with its joint venture partner Aeromexico. Each of the airlines is a part of the SkyTeam frequent flyer alliance, and Delta has a 49 percent ownership position in Aeromexico, the largest airline in Mexico.

The cooperation allows the airlines to split profits on specific routes and to offer connecting flights on one other’s aircraft. For instance, a passenger traveling on a Delta flight from Minneapolis/St. Paul could take the route to Mexico City and then connect to a flight on Aeromexico to one of the airline’s other destinations in Mexico or Central America.

Steve Sear

According to Steve Sear, a top Delta executive for international service and sales, the new Mexico City route is being lauded as one of the “most requested destinations” for travelers from Minneapolis/St. Paul.

Sears stated, “At the same time, it offers clients greater choice and possibilities through one straightforward, practical link as well as straightforward connections to dozens of places in Mexico thanks to our partnership with Aeromexico.

Aeromexico

Aeromexico provides flights to Mexico City from four locations, all of which serve as hubs for Delta. In addition to Delta, Aeromexico flies from Detroit, Los Angeles, and New York JFK. Seattle, one of Delta’s most recent hub locations, also provides flights to Mexico City.

The new service completes nonstop flights offered by Delta and Aeromexico from all of Delta’s U.S. hubs to Aeromexico’s hub at Mexico City Benito Juarez International Airport, where conveniently scheduled flights connect passengers to not only Mexico’s largest and capital city but also to dozens of locations all over Mexico. Thanks to Delta and Aeromexico, there are more than 160 flights per day that connect the United States and Mexico.

The Minneapolis/St. Paul hub of Delta offers over 400 departures each day to carry customers quickly across the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Asia, including Tokyo-Haneda Airport, the preferred airport for business travelers located close to central Tokyo. In early 2018, Delta and partner Korean Air announced a new service to the Seoul-Incheon airport, which started in April 2019. In addition, Delta suggested a flight from Minneapolis/St. Paul to Shanghai, which, if permitted by the necessary authorities, would begin operations in 2020.
