Ugadi Festival is celebrated to make the beginning of the New Year as per the Hindu calendar and a happier time. Ugadi is an auspicious day as it brings happiness, prosperity, abundance, growth, and joy along with it. The term ‘Ugadi” consists of two Sanskrit words, ‘Yuga’ and ‘Adi,’ which means ‘Age’ and ‘Beginning,’ respectively.

On this day, we worship Lord Brahma and Vishnu, the creator of the universe and Yugas. Ugadi is celebrated with utmost faith in the southern states of India. People in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka consider Ugadi one of the most important annual festivals. They celebrate it with great enthusiasm. Story Behind Ugadi

There is a fascinating mythological story behind Ugadi. Ages ago, there was a fierce demon named Somakasura. Somakasura once stole the Vedas from Brahma and hid them deep under the sea. Lord Brahma asked Lord Vishnu to help deal with Somakasura and get back the lost Vedas. Lord Vishnu took the form of a fish, the Matsya Avatar, and killed Somakasura under the sea. Lord Vishnu secured the Vedas and returned them to Lord Brahma. After that, Lord Brahma started creating the world we live in. The day he created the world is known as Ugadi. Thus, Ugadi is celebrated as the beginning of this world.

Another myth is that Ugadi marks the start of the current yuga, ‘Kaliyuga.’ The Kaliyuga started when Lord Krishna left this earth. Thus, we celebrate the beginning of the current yuga.
