Son Beel is famous for its fishery and is one of the main producers of fish for the entire district in Southern Assam. It is best visited during the rainy season that is from March onwards and till the beginning of winters. 

Son Beel has so far been recorded to be home to 89 species of birds belonging to 32 different families. Amongst which, 13 were water-dependent birds, 39 were water birds, and 37 were terrestrial birds. Two species that were listed as near threatened; red-breasted parakeet and black-headed ibis can also be found in Son Beel lake. 

Two vulnerable species, Pallas’s fish eagle and lesser adjutant were also seen in it. The water from this lake overflows through the Kakra river and flows to Bangladesh.
