Austrian Airlines: Baggage Policies and Additional Rules

Shortened as Austrian, Austrian Airlines is Austria’s largest airline and a flag carrier of Austria. This airline maintains its hub and is headquartered at Vienna International Airport in Schwechat. This airline flies for six domestic and about 120 international flights in the entire year with destinations in about 55 countries.

Every ticket you buy includes a certain amount of baggage allowance depending upon the flight route, there are certain instructions regarding the same.

Baggage Policies

The free baggage allowance is mentioned on your ticket, according to the destination place and the type of class you want to travel in, that may vary from economy to business.

General information

  • Make sure to mark your baggage with your name and address.
  • It is highly recommended to avoid putting your money, jewelry, computers, cameras, passports, and mobile phones in your checked baggage. You can carry all these articles in your hand baggage.
  • Baggage weighing more than 32kgs will not be accepted at the check-in.
  • Special transport conditions are applicable for baggage exceeding the dimension 158 cm (length + width + height).
  • The carry-on baggage shall not exceed the dimensions of 55cm× 40cm×23cm. It shall also not exceed the weight of 8kg.
  • The carry-on baggage shall be sized accordingly that can easily adjust in the over-head cabin or under the seat at your front.
  • Business class travelers are permitted to travel with two pieces of carry-on baggage, whereas, economy and premium economy passengers can carry only one piece of the baggage.
  • Also, Austrian Airlines supports a range of sporting equipment without any surcharge as long as the weight and the number of baggage do not exceed.

Additional Rules

  • The free baggage allowance may be higher for people traveling in economy class but only in exceptional cases. These exceptions are very clearly stated on your ticket.
  • If the journey is booked with several airlines, the baggage rules that are applied for the airline covering a significant part of the journey.
  • According to the rules by US DOT and CTA, the baggage rules of the airline stated first on the ticket are followed.
  • If the entire journey includes a combination of flights with Austrian Airlines, then the baggage allowance may be determined according to the policies of the airline you are covering a maximum part of the journey with.
  • Weight scheme may also be implemented, that means that the baggage allowance will be considered as per the weight and not according to the pieces that mean 20kg or 30kg.
