Formerly known as Borjhar Airport and now popularly known as Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport, Guwahati Airport is the chief airport for all the Indian North-Eastern states. This airport lies in the Borjhar district of Assam and it is named after the first chief minister of Assam who was also a freedom fighter- Gopinath Bordoloi, after got its independence in 1947.
Presently, this airport is handled by AAI (Airports Authority of India) and also serves as the base for India Air Force. The AAI has been planning on expanding this airport with at least two aero-bridges. Also, one new hanger was constructed to ease the parking of overnight parking. By the end of year 2020, it is expected that one new terminal will also be ready which would cover a area of over 77,500 square meter. Guwahati airport is considered as the hub for national flights to North-Eastern states and in addition to that it also offers international flights to Paro & Bangkok.
There are two terminals at Guwahati Airport, 1 international and other for domestic terminal. The airport has a capacity of holding 500 passengers at the engaging hour and the airport can handle about 125 people at both arrival & departure. Travelers witness six boarding gates at domestic terminal and one boarding at international terminal. The airport also has four immigration counters and 14 check-in counters and one custom counter.
